Shawano Indoor Flea Market

The Shawano Community Hall, constructed between 1928 and 1929, was a collaborative project between the City of Shawano and American Legion Post #117. This venue serves as a tribute to military personnel who fought in World War One.

The American Legion contributed a parcel of land on Division Street, chosen for its central location, to facilitate the construction of the Community Hall. Additionally, the Legion played a crucial role in raising the $20,000 required for the project’s completion.

Architectural plans outlined a brick facade and two levels: the ground floor featured a wooden dance floor, a stage, and restroom facilities, while the lower level was designed to include a fully equipped kitchen and dining area for serving large gatherings.

Over the years, the Shawano Community Hall has been a vibrant hub for various events, including dances, wedding receptions, musical performances, and community meetings. Attendees of the dances often frequented nearby Main Street taverns, as the hall did not serve alcohol.

In the 1950s and 60s, the Community Hall also functioned as a YMCA facility, with Guy Booth as the director. During this period, the upper level was utilized as a basketball court.

City elections were conducted in the hall, utilizing both floors for voting purposes.

After many years of service, the city sold the Community Hall to Bob Zurko of Zurko Promotions in 2005. Currently, Mr. Zurko organizes indoor flea markets and auctions at this historic venue.
